Chiropractic Care After a Motor Vehicle Accident in Penticton

A car accident can leave you dealing with pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility that disrupts every part of your daily life. Even low-speed collisions can cause significant soft tissue injuries, spinal misalignment, and nerve irritation that may not be immediately apparent. Symptoms like neck pain, headaches, back stiffness, and shoulder tension often develop in the hours and days following a crash — and without proper treatment, they can become chronic.

At Okanagan Chiropractic Center, we have been treating motor vehicle accident injuries in Penticton for over 35 years. Our three chiropractors — Dr. Condren Berry, Dr. Tamara Kornelsen, and Dr. Maia Pidperyhora — each bring specialized experience in assessing and treating the full range of MVA-related injuries, from whiplash and cervical strain to lower back injuries, thoracic stiffness, and radiating pain.

Why Early Treatment Matters

Research consistently shows that patients who begin chiropractic treatment soon after a motor vehicle accident experience faster recovery and better long-term outcomes than those who delay care. Inflammation, scar tissue formation, and compensatory movement patterns all accelerate when injuries go untreated. Your 12-week ICBC treatment window starts from the date of your accident — not the date of your first visit — which makes early action especially important.

When you visit our clinic, your initial assessment includes a thorough history of the accident, a comprehensive physical examination, orthopedic and neurological testing, and — where indicated — diagnostic imaging. From there, your chiropractor develops a personalized treatment plan targeting your specific injuries and recovery goals.

What We Treat After MVA Injuries

The injuries we most commonly treat following motor vehicle accidents include whiplash and cervical acceleration-deceleration injuries, mid-back and lower back pain from impact forces, headaches originating from cervical trauma, shoulder and upper extremity pain, muscle spasm and soft tissue inflammation, and joint restriction throughout the spine. Our approach combines hands-on spinal adjustments, soft tissue therapy, active release techniques, and guided rehabilitation exercises to restore function and reduce pain progressively over your treatment plan.

The 12-Week Window and Treatment Extensions

Your 25 pre-approved ICBC chiropractic sessions must be used within the first 12 weeks following your accident. This is known as the Early Access Period under ICBC's Enhanced Care model. If your recovery requires additional treatment beyond this initial period, your chiropractor will submit a Treatment Plan to ICBC on your behalf outlining your progress, ongoing clinical needs, and recommended continuation of care. Extensions are commonly approved when supported by clinical documentation — and we handle all the administrative work so you can stay focused on healing.

ICBC Enhanced Care: No-Fault Coverage

Since May 2021, ICBC has operated under an Enhanced Care no-fault model. This means that every person injured in a motor vehicle accident in British Columbia is entitled to the same healthcare benefits regardless of who caused the collision. Whether you were the driver, passenger, cyclist, or pedestrian — and whether or not the accident was your fault — you have the same access to 25 pre-approved chiropractic visits with no referral and no out-of-pocket cost.

Workplace Injuries
WorkSafeBC Chiropractic Coverage
Injured on the job? WorkSafeBC covers your chiropractic treatment so you can recover and return to work safely.

If you've sustained a work-related injury, you're entitled to chiropractic care through WorkSafeBC with no referral required. Chiropractors in BC are primary healthcare providers recognized by WorkSafeBC, meaning you can begin treatment directly — no need to see your family doctor first.

How WorkSafeBC Coverage Works

For an accepted musculoskeletal injury claim, WorkSafeBC covers up to 11 chiropractic sessions within 8 weeks, provided your initial chiropractic visit occurs within 60 days of the date of injury. If your first visit is more than 60 days after the injury, WorkSafeBC approval is required before treatment begins. Your chiropractor submits all required reports and bills WorkSafeBC directly. If your recovery requires care beyond 8 weeks, your chiropractor submits a Chiropractic Treatment Report (Form 83D667) requesting an extension at week six or session eight, whichever comes first.

Treatment may begin while your claim is pending — your chiropractor will file the Chiropractor's First Report (Form 8C) within three days of your initial visit. If the claim is later denied, you may be responsible for the cost of the visits.

Frequently Asked Questions
ICBC & WorkSafeBC Chiropractic — Your Questions Answered
How many chiropractic visits does ICBC cover after a car accident?
Under ICBC's Enhanced Care model, you are pre-approved for 25 chiropractic sessions within the first 12 weeks of your accident. This includes your initial assessment visit. No doctor referral or ICBC adjuster approval is needed to begin treatment. If you need continued care beyond 12 weeks, your chiropractor can submit a Treatment Plan requesting additional sessions.
Do I need a referral to see a chiropractor after an ICBC claim?
No. In British Columbia, chiropractors are recognized as primary healthcare providers. You do not need a referral from your family doctor, and you do not need pre-authorization from your ICBC adjuster. You can book directly with our clinic as soon as you have your ICBC claim number.
Will I have to pay anything out of pocket for my ICBC visits?
No. Okanagan Chiropractic Center is part of ICBC's Recovery Network, which means we bill ICBC directly for your pre-approved chiropractic sessions. There is no out-of-pocket cost to you for these visits.
How soon after a car accident should I start chiropractic treatment?
As soon as possible. Early treatment leads to better recovery outcomes and helps prevent acute injuries from becoming chronic. You can begin chiropractic care immediately after filing your ICBC claim — there is no waiting period. Remember that your 12-week treatment window starts from the accident date, not your first appointment.
Does it matter who was at fault in the accident?
No. Under ICBC's Enhanced Care no-fault model (effective since May 2021), all parties involved in a motor vehicle accident in BC have the same access to benefits — regardless of fault. Whether you were the driver, passenger, cyclist, or pedestrian, you are entitled to the same 25 pre-approved chiropractic visits.
What should I bring to my first ICBC chiropractic appointment?
Bring your ICBC claim number, BC driver's licence or government-issued photo ID, your Personal Health Number (PHN) from your BC Services Card, and your ICBC adjuster's name and contact information if you have it. If you don't have a claim number yet, call ICBC at 1-800-910-4222 to report your accident first.
What if I need more than 25 visits?
If your recovery requires additional treatment beyond the 25 pre-approved sessions, your chiropractor can submit a Treatment Plan to ICBC requesting extended care. These extensions are commonly approved when supported by clinical documentation showing ongoing need. We handle all the paperwork — you just continue with your treatment.
Does WorkSafeBC cover chiropractic care for work injuries?
Yes. For an accepted musculoskeletal injury claim, WorkSafeBC covers up to 11 chiropractic sessions within 8 weeks, provided the initial visit occurs within 60 days of the injury. No referral is required — chiropractors are primary healthcare providers under WorkSafeBC. We bill directly, so there is no cost to you. Extensions can be requested at week six or session eight if clinically necessary. Full WorkSafeBC details →
Can I see a chiropractor if my WorkSafeBC claim hasn't been accepted yet?
Yes. Your chiropractor can begin treatment while your claim is pending and will submit the Chiropractor's First Report (Form 8C) to WorkSafeBC within three days of your initial visit. If WorkSafeBC later accepts your claim, we bill them for the treatment provided. If the claim is denied, you may be responsible for the cost of the visits.
