Hands-On, Evidence-Based Treatment · Full-Body Assessment Every Visit

Three experienced chiropractors providing individualized, whole-body care for patients of all ages. We don't do cookie-cutter treatments — every visit begins with a thorough assessment so your care targets the actual cause, not just the symptom.

What Is Chiropractic Care?

Chiropractic care is a hands-on, drug-free approach to health that focuses on the relationship between your spine, nervous system, and overall body function. When spinal joints lose their normal alignment or mobility — through injury, repetitive stress, poor posture, or everyday wear — they create interference in the nervous system that can produce pain, stiffness, reduced range of motion, and a cascade of secondary problems throughout the body.

At Okanagan Chiropractic Center, chiropractic care means more than a quick adjustment and out the door. We've been Penticton's trusted chiropractic practice for over 35 years, and our philosophy has remained consistent throughout: find the root cause, treat the whole person, and give every patient the individualized attention they deserve. Our doctors perform a comprehensive full-body assessment at every visit — evaluating your spine from top to bottom, checking joint mobility, muscle balance, and neurological function before determining exactly where and how to treat. This approach ensures your care evolves with your body and your progress, rather than following a rigid, one-size-fits-all protocol.

How a Typical Visit Works

Your first visit timing varies by practitioner and includes a detailed health history, thorough physical examination with orthopedic and neurological testing, postural assessment, and your first treatment. Your chiropractor will explain their findings in plain language, discuss the underlying cause of your symptoms, and outline a personalized treatment plan with clear goals, expected visit frequency, and realistic timelines for recovery.

Follow-up visits are shorter but equally thorough. Your chiropractor reassesses your spine and functional movement at the start of every appointment — identifying what has improved, what remains restricted, and where to focus that day's treatment. This is what separates our approach: no two visits look the same because your body isn't the same from one visit to the next. If something has shifted since your last appointment — whether from activity, work, sleep position, or stress — your treatment adapts accordingly.

Our Treatment Approach — Multiple Techniques, One Goal

Our three doctors bring complementary training and technique specialties, allowing us to match the right approach to each patient's condition, preferences, and comfort level. Dr. Condren Berry's 35+ years of experience in Diversified Technique and full-body biomechanical assessment anchors the practice. Dr. Tamara Kornelsen adds advanced soft tissue expertise through Active Release Technique (ART) and Applied Kinesiology — particularly effective for athletes, repetitive strain injuries, and complex chronic cases. Dr. Maia Pidperyhora brings a rehabilitation-focused approach with specialized training in sports injury recovery and TMJ dysfunction.

Whether you respond better to hands-on manual adjustments or prefer a gentler instrument-assisted method like the Activator, we have you covered. Every treatment plan is built around evidence-based techniques and typically combines spinal adjustments with soft tissue therapy, functional rehabilitation exercises, and lifestyle guidance to address the root cause and prevent recurrence. We never recommend more care than you need — and we measure progress against clear functional benchmarks, not arbitrary visit counts.

Custom Orthotics for Long-Term Stability

For patients whose spinal problems are connected to biomechanical imbalances in the feet, legs, or pelvis, we offer custom orthotics through our FootLevelers digital scanning system. A 60-second 3D foot scan reveals asymmetries and arch collapse that may be contributing to chronic pain patterns above. FootLevelers orthotics are individually handcrafted to support all three arches of each foot — not just generic arch support insoles. Correcting the foundation helps your adjustments hold longer and reduces the repetitive strain that drives recurrence.

Our Techniques
How We Treat — Tailored to You
Five distinct techniques across three doctors means we can match the right approach to your condition, comfort level, and treatment goals.

Diversified Technique

The gold standard of chiropractic — precise, hands-on manual adjustments delivered to specific spinal segments. Restores joint mobility, corrects alignment, and reduces nerve interference. Used by all three doctors at OCC.

All Doctors

Activator Method

A gentle, low-force instrument-assisted technique ideal for patients who prefer a lighter approach — including children, seniors, and those with acute pain or osteoporosis. Delivers a controlled, targeted impulse without manual twisting or cracking.

Gentle · Low-Force

Active Release Technique (ART)

A movement-based soft tissue system that treats adhesions, scar tissue, and overuse injuries in muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, and nerves. Especially effective for repetitive strain, sports injuries, and chronic tension patterns.

Dr. Kornelsen Specialty

Applied Kinesiology

Uses manual muscle testing to evaluate how your nervous system controls muscle function, identifying hidden weaknesses, imbalances, and stress patterns that standard examination may miss. Guides targeted treatment and nutritional support.

Dr. Kornelsen Specialty

Full Spine Assessment

Every visit at OCC begins with a comprehensive top-to-bottom spinal evaluation — checking joint mobility, postural alignment, muscle tone, and neurological indicators. This ensures treatment is always directed at what your body needs that day, not a predetermined protocol.

Common Questions
Chiropractic Care FAQ
Do I need a referral to see a chiropractor in Penticton?
No. In British Columbia, chiropractors are primary contact practitioners — you can book directly without a referral from your family doctor. This applies to private visits, ICBC auto injury claims, and WorkSafeBC workplace injury claims. Simply call us at (250) 492-7027 or book online through JaneApp.
How many chiropractic visits will I need?
It depends on your specific condition, its severity, and how long it has been present. Many patients with acute issues experience significant improvement within 4 to 6 visits. Chronic or complex conditions may require a longer treatment plan. Your chiropractor will provide a clear, personalized recommendation — including expected visit frequency and total duration — after your initial assessment. We never recommend more care than you need.
Does a chiropractic adjustment hurt?
Most patients experience little to no discomfort during an adjustment. You may hear a popping or cracking sound — this is simply gas releasing from the joint capsule and is completely harmless. For patients who prefer a gentler approach, we offer the Activator Method, a low-force instrument-assisted technique that delivers precise corrections without manual twisting. Some mild soreness for 24 to 48 hours after your first visit is normal and typically resolves quickly.
Do you treat children and infants?
Yes. We provide gentle, age-appropriate chiropractic care for patients of all ages — from newborns through seniors. Pediatric techniques use very light pressure, significantly less force than you would use to test the ripeness of a tomato. Common childhood conditions we help with include colic, torticollis, growing pains, sports injuries, and postural issues related to screen time and heavy backpacks.
Does insurance cover chiropractic care?
Yes. ICBC covers up to 25 pre-approved visits for auto accident injuries — no referral needed and we bill directly at no cost to you. WorkSafeBC covers up to 11 sessions within 8 weeks for workplace injuries. Most extended health insurance plans include chiropractic benefits, and we offer direct billing through JaneApp to providers including Greenshield. Contact us if you're unsure about your coverage — we're happy to help you check.
