Gentle Prenatal & Postpartum Care for You and Your Baby

Pregnancy transforms your body in remarkable ways — but the extra weight, shifting centre of gravity, and hormonal changes can create real discomfort. Our chiropractors provide safe, specialized care through every trimester to keep you comfortable, aligned, and moving well.

How Pregnancy Changes Your Body — And How Chiropractic Helps

From the earliest weeks of pregnancy, your body begins a profound biomechanical transformation. Rising levels of relaxin loosen the ligaments that stabilize your pelvis and spine, preparing for delivery but also reducing the structural support your joints depend on. As your baby grows, the additional weight shifts your centre of gravity forward, increasing the curve of your lower back and placing new strain on muscles, discs, and joints that were never designed to carry that load in that position.

These changes are natural and necessary — but they frequently produce discomfort that ranges from mild stiffness to debilitating pain. Lower back pain affects the majority of pregnant women, often beginning in the second trimester and intensifying as the baby grows. Pelvic pain, round ligament tension, sciatica, and pubic symphysis dysfunction are equally common and can significantly impact sleep, mobility, and daily function. Many women assume this pain is simply part of pregnancy and something to endure. It doesn't have to be.

Chiropractic care during pregnancy focuses on maintaining proper pelvic and spinal alignment as your body changes, reducing nerve irritation, relieving muscle tension, and supporting the musculoskeletal system through each progressive stage. All three of our doctors — Dr. Condren Berry, Dr. Tamara Kornelsen, and Dr. Maia Pidperyhora — are experienced in prenatal chiropractic care and use pregnancy-adapted techniques that are gentle, safe, and effective at every stage.

Pregnancy-Specific Techniques and Comfort

Our treatment tables feature drop-away abdominal sections that allow you to lie comfortably face down at any point during pregnancy — even in the third trimester. This means we can perform thorough spinal assessments and adjustments without any pressure on your belly. Techniques are modified throughout your pregnancy: lighter force, specific pelvic positioning, and gentle sustained contact replace the standard adjustments used for non-pregnant patients.

Many of our prenatal patients continue regular adjustments right through their third trimester and into the final weeks before delivery. They consistently report reduced back and pelvic pain, better sleep, improved mobility, and greater overall comfort compared to previous pregnancies where they did not receive chiropractic care. Some patients also report that labour felt shorter and more manageable, though individual experiences vary.

Pelvic Alignment and Optimal Fetal Positioning

One of the most important aspects of prenatal chiropractic care is maintaining proper pelvic alignment. When the pelvis is misaligned or restricted, it can reduce the available space within the uterus and create uneven tension in the muscles and ligaments that support it. Maintaining balanced pelvic alignment may help create the best possible environment for your baby to settle into the optimal head-down, anterior position for delivery. While chiropractors do not manually reposition babies, restoring pelvic balance supports your body's natural ability to facilitate proper fetal positioning.

Your Pregnancy Journey
Care Through Every Trimester
Your body changes dramatically from conception through delivery. Our approach adapts at every stage to address the specific demands of each trimester.
First Trimester

Weeks 1–12

Establish a baseline and address early postural changes. Relaxin is already loosening ligaments, and many women experience fatigue, nausea, and lower back tension. Early pelvic alignment sets the foundation for a more comfortable pregnancy. Gentle, conservative techniques are used throughout.

Second Trimester

Weeks 13–26

The baby's rapid growth shifts your centre of gravity forward, increasing lumbar curve and placing new strain on the pelvis, hips, and mid-back. Round ligament pain often develops. Regular adjustments help your body adapt to these changes and maintain mobility as the load increases.

Third Trimester

Weeks 27–40

Maximum weight and biomechanical demand. Pelvic alignment becomes critical for both comfort and optimal fetal positioning. Our drop-away tables allow comfortable face-down treatment even at full term. Many patients increase visit frequency in the final weeks and report less discomfort during delivery.

Common Discomforts
Pregnancy Conditions We Address
These are the most common musculoskeletal complaints our pregnant patients bring to us — all respond well to gentle chiropractic care.

Lower Back Pain

The most common pregnancy complaint — increased lumbar load & postural shift

Pelvic Pain

Sacroiliac dysfunction, pelvic girdle pain & instability

Sciatica

Radiating leg pain from nerve compression in the pelvis

Round Ligament Tension

Sharp abdominal & groin pain from uterine support strain

Pubic Symphysis Dysfunction

Anterior pelvic joint separation & instability

Mid-Back & Rib Pain

Thoracic tension from postural changes & breathing demands

After Delivery
Postpartum Recovery

Your body doesn't stop needing care once the baby arrives. Delivery — whether vaginal or caesarean — places significant stress on the pelvis, spine, and surrounding musculature. The postpartum period brings its own set of physical demands: nursing posture, carrying and lifting your baby, disrupted sleep, and the gradual process of ligaments regaining their pre-pregnancy stability.

Postpartum chiropractic care helps restore pelvic alignment, address spinal strain from labour, and prevent the chronic pain patterns that many new mothers develop from the repetitive demands of infant care. We recommend a postpartum assessment within 4 to 6 weeks of delivery.

Pelvic realignment after the structural demands of labour and delivery

Nursing posture correction — addressing upper back, neck, and shoulder strain from feeding positions

Carrying and lifting strain — preventing chronic patterns from daily infant care demands

C-section recovery support — gentle spinal and pelvic care during surgical healing

Transition to pediatric care — many families bring baby in for a newborn assessment at the same visit

Common Questions
Pregnancy Chiropractic FAQ
Is chiropractic safe during pregnancy?
Yes. Chiropractic care is widely recognized as safe throughout all three trimesters. Our chiropractors use pregnancy-adapted techniques with gentle, low-force adjustments and specialized treatment tables with drop-away abdominal sections so you can lie comfortably face down at any stage. There is no high-force manipulation or twisting. Many obstetricians and midwives in the Okanagan recommend chiropractic care as part of a healthy pregnancy.
When should I start prenatal chiropractic care?
You can begin at any point during pregnancy. Many patients start in the first trimester to establish good pelvic alignment before significant biomechanical changes occur, while others seek care when discomfort develops later. Starting early gives the best foundation, but it is never too late to benefit — we regularly see patients for the first time in their third trimester and still achieve meaningful relief.
How often should I see a chiropractor during pregnancy?
Visit frequency depends on your symptoms and stage of pregnancy. Many prenatal patients are seen every two to four weeks during the first and second trimesters, increasing to weekly visits in the third trimester as the body undergoes the most rapid changes. Your chiropractor will recommend a schedule based on your specific needs and adjust it as your pregnancy progresses. There is no rigid protocol — care is always individualized.
Can chiropractic help with breech positioning?
Chiropractic care focuses on maintaining proper pelvic alignment and reducing tension in the surrounding muscles and ligaments. When the pelvis is well-aligned and the uterine environment is balanced, it can create more space for the baby to move into the optimal head-down position. While chiropractors do not manually turn babies, restoring pelvic balance may support the body's natural ability to facilitate proper fetal positioning. If breech presentation is a concern, discuss it with both your chiropractor and your obstetric provider.
